The Devils, Driftwood & More: Another Delightful Weekend

Category: Food

Oh boy, I’m back again with another “last weekend this weekend” recap.

Last Saturday, we went to Tanger Outlets in Washington because there’s a cafe called Paper People that I have been wanting to try. They have a seasonal “monster matcha” for October and I NEEDED to get it while it lasts, and it was a good call. That was some good matcha –  it had maple syrup in it and was topped with charcoal cold foam for the “monster” vibes.

I bought some stickers for my journal too of course.

While we were hanging out with our drinks and cookies (I had a sincerely wonderful iced oatmeal cookie that I would go back for in a heartbeat, actually), I was looking at the coloring book pages taped to the wall.

“I could do so much better than these,” I said, cupping my hand to catch the cascade of cookie crumbs.

Henry gave me his patented “get real” smirk. “Well these were done by children, so.”

“Yeah, and in first grade I won a coloring contest which made me believe I was an artist. But actually, that’s when I peaked,” I said sadly, and I remember VIVIDLY the page we had to color – it had a school bus on it and it had something to do with safety, I don’t know. But I had taught myself shading back then and NO ONE ELSE WAS DOING THAT YET. But you, that’s just how I was back then, paving the way, intersections and all.

Most likely minimizing my feelings after I bared my coloring contest winning soul to him.

After that, we went to Pet Supplies Plus where Sade was playing and a lady walking by said, “Well, they play some good music here for the animals” and I KNOW THAT’S RIGHT. That was all that happened there really, I just never like to pass up an opportunity to mention Sade.

Then we went to Carnegie because there’s a stationary store there and I wanted to get some journaling stuff AND I also ended up buying one of the most beautiful journals I have ever seen. It was small and kind of pricy but Papa H goes, “You’ll use it so you deserve to have it.”

WHO

IS

THIS

GUY

But anyway, yeah, thanks dad, I was buying it with it or without your consent.

There was a book store next door. I didn’t get anything but I like to walk around and say, “I’ve read that. Read that. Read it. Read that one too. Oh that book is so bad” while Henry’s eyes glaze over.

That night, we went to Hillview Manor but I’ll save the recap for my next haunted house round-up post because I’m still pissed off about the night’s events and have little energy to give it right now. I did write about it in my haunted house journal though and nearly scratched through the paper in my heavy-handed pen-pressing ire.

SUNDAY!! We went to see Ken Russell’s The Devils at the Hollywood down the street around noon and shooooooo, I have not been able to stop thinking about this movie and if nothing else, it fanned the flames of my old Oliver Reed crush—holy shiiiiiit. I was like O.O <—that through the whole movie. It was pure 1970s art and I am so glad we went to see this in all of its uncensored glory because WDYM there’s a scene with nuns tearing a giant crucifix off the wall and fucking it??

AND THE RANDOM CROCODILE APPEARANCE??

I mean, I am so enthralled that I made this page for my journal. Oliver Reed, I wish you were still alive to witness the absolute thirst trap you’ve become on social media.

Not from last weekend, but I took this after I finished my Devils page last night — my journal is a thiccccc boi!

After that, we went to Driftwood for pizza. IT WAS SO GOOD. Usually I’m like, hesitant to agree with the hype but this tasted every bit as fancy as it looked.

Probably ruing the day he bought me my Charmera. I TAKE THIS FUCKER EVERYWHERE AND IT HAS NOT GOTTEN OLD YET. (I mean the camera, not Henry. Henry has certainly gotten old. LOL. Ugh, haven’t we all though.)

This was Henry’s beer but I was trying to log it on Untappd (I log everything even if I only have a sip which is probably why I appear to be a regular drunkard over on that app when actually, I rarely even have a full beer) but this broad was standing there the whole time waiting for her pizza AND RUINING MY CHECK-IN PHOTO.

Thank god our pizza came when it did though because I was getting very hangry (OK, hangRIER) and was sniping at Henry left and right. He was innocently trying to talk to me about the new record cabinet we got and how I want it to be painted / what theme I’m going for and I don’t know why, but he was NOT understanding what I was saying and we started arguing about the edge of the drawers and the amount of times we said EDGE was maybe making the older couple at the table next to ours nervous. (They were visiting from somewhere I didn’t catch, and were going to see the Jaybirds at the Thunderbird Cafe that night, and our server, who was cool AF and I loved her, said she was also a fan. I looked them up and they’re alt-country so I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that I would not be a fan.)

OMG. It was literally just cheese and mushrooms but BRO it was made with so much care and quality ingredients – I think there was some chili oil in there too, it was just so good. Pittsburgh’s only sourdough pizza joint, apparently!

OK, here’s the description from their website: SHIITAKE MUSHROOMS WITH MORITA CHILI OIL, HERBED RICOTTA, MOZZARELLA, PROVOLA, FRESH GARLIC, WHITE WINE SHALLOT CREAM SAUCE

Yes.

Me trying to take a picture of Henry through the mason glass because I’m a child.

Our server set aside a slice of the lemon cake for us because I was getting super nervous while waiting for our pizza — there appeared to be only ONE SLICE left in the case so Henry was like, “I will be your hero and ask.” She said she thought there was still some left but would set aside a slice just in case. When she brought it out later, she said it was the penultimate slice and that we were smart to pre-order.

Smart? When it comes to dessert, I am a fucking Mensa member, OK. I wasn’t letting that slice slip away.

Anyway, we were STUFFED after that. What a delicious ending to a delightful weekend (except for HILLVIEW MANOR WHICH YOU WILL HEAR / READ ALL ABOUT AT A LATER DATE!!!!!!).
