Ube This, Ube That

Category: Food,rantacular,reviews

I had a pretty decent Halloween staycation this year! Normally, I would take the whole week off but this year I only took two days. And honestly, that was only because I have a bunch of PTO that I need to use.

Day two was pretty nice because Henry came home from work early and we went to Lola’s for breakfast! I have been trying to go to this place for at least two years now. The closest I came was two winters ago when Megan and I chose this place for brunch with Debby, Mar, and Jill but this place is really small, doesn’t take reservations, and isn’t really equipped to handle groups of more than 4. I was barely even able to squeeze inside to put in my name that day and we ended up going to the Abbey instead (tried and true).

The lure of ube was too strong though and I NEEDED to go there yesterday, especially after seeing that their weekday-only special is ube mochi waffles. So not only could we avoid the weekend crowd but ALSO get the waffles? Yeah, let’s go.

I was also going to get an ube latte but then thought, “Is that overkill?” so I was going to just get drip coffee—then I saw that the fall special is a smoked miso maple latte? Yes. That. I want that. Anything that’s not pumpkin! (I do like pumpkin spice lattes but I have had more bad ones than good so I usually don’t much of a craving for them.)

Anyway, this latte was delectable. I love when you can actually taste what a latte is flavored with and it’s not just gross mass-produced syrups. This was perfect. Not too sweet. The miso added some salty umami. It was very filling though!

MUCH LIKE MY WAFFLES…

Bro….even the butter was ube-infused and the syrup was the good maple kind from Paul’s Family Farm or wherever. The ube was strong and real. (I hate hate hate when you go to white people-run establishments and they catch wind of some “new and exotic flavor sensation” and try to incorporate it into all of their basic menu items and it just never works because they don’t know what it’s supposed to taste like or how to cook with it. The owners (or at least one of them?) have Filipino and Mexican backgrounds and it shows.  This waffle was everything…the mochi gave it a gooey, brownie batter-like texture and I was doing everything in my power not to have a Sally Albright moment in my seat.

Henry’s was served on a nice plate but he was unhappy with it. It was just the “All-American Breakfast” and he said it was not worth what he was charged for it. I mean, I guess I can see where he’s coming from: 6 potatoes and those dry AF-looking sausages look like they’re from a school cafeteria breakfast. He didn’t comment on the eggs, but he did say that the toast was good (I mean, the bread is from Mediterra and that place rules, so…)

I gave him some of my waffle because the latte prevented me from beasting my plate and he did agree that they were awesome. I told him it’s his fault for ordering the basic American default menu item and not something Filipino but he whined that there WAS NOTHING HE REALLY WANTED. Wow, say we only came there because I wanted to without saying it, Henry.

He’s so annoying.

We did get an ube cookie and an apple fritter to go and those were both A+. I want to go back for the ube cinnamon roll and he was like, “WE’LL SEE.” That doesn’t sound promising so if anyone wants to meet me at Lola’s for breakfast someday so I can motorboat a giant ube cinnamon roll, hmu.

I just felt like taking this picture, OK?

Came home and saw that the commemorative “GLENN RETIRED” book that I made had arrived! I’m always so nervous when my Shutterfly books are delivered because they’re always yelling about my LOW RESOLUTION PHOTOS!!!! and TEXT IS TOO CLOSE TO THE EDGE!!! but then it always ends up printing fine, thank god. I can’t wait to present it to him!

Then Henry and I went to the post office to get our pictures taken for our passport renewal and that was relatively painless but I hate getting my picture taken especially when it’s out in the open. Some man in line was like, “YOU GUYS GOING ANYWHERE FUN OUT OF THE COUNTRY?” and unfortunately no, LOL. Nothing planned but ours both expire in the spring and you know how some countries are so weird about passports being less than 6 mths away from expiration, etc etc plus I was getting so nervous about the new TRUMP page that he has been threatening and I do not want to spend the next 10 years with his fucking punchable puckered anus face in my passport.

I think I probably mentioned this on here, not sure, but we were actually supposed to go to SAUDI ARABIA and the UAE in February with Coaster Crew. LITERALLY THREE DAYS after we put in our deposit last winter, Trump started his fuck ass war with Iran. So we immediately asked for our deposit back (yes, we did it get back). I thought for sure this trip would have been canceled anyway, but it’s still business as usual in Thoosie Lala Land, I guess. I saw someone made a post about the recent airport bombing in Riyadh and their concern about safety and Tim was like, “OH DON’T WORRY, OUR TRIP IS FAR ENOUGH AWAY” etc etc. Excuse me, sir, there is a war going on and it’s affecting that entire region and you guys are going there as Americans with targets on your backs, for what? To ratchet up some arbitrary coaster count that no one cares about?  Ridic.

I have been on my soapbox about this for mths now, tone deaf coaster community. I’m sure a lot of them are MAGA too but I don’t think Tim is and I’m kind of surprised at how blasé his responses and updates have been. I mean, he tried to talk us out of withdrawing, saying, “It’s still a year away, a lot can change.” Yeah, no.

Well, I guess it’s time for me to prepare for the 5-7  kids that might come trick-or-treating, LOL, Then it’s Castle Blood time! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
